Booking agents

These sell other firms' boats. Useful for searching widely; the boat and the handover still come from one of the firms above.

Questions

Which narrowboat hire company is best for beginners?

Look for a firm whose instructor goes through a real lock with you. Andersen Boats, Union Canal Carriers, Wyvern Shipping and Calcutt Boats all say they do. Norbury Wharf's base sits on a 17-mile stretch with no locks, which gives you time to learn the boat first.

Can I take my dog on a narrowboat holiday?

Almost every firm takes dogs. ABC Boat Hire, Anglo Welsh, Andersen Boats, Beacon Park Boats and Clifton Cruisers say dogs go free (with limits on numbers). Others charge from £25 per pet per holiday up to £60 per pet per week on the Caledonian Canal. Some boats in most fleets are pet-free, so say so when you book.

Is fuel included in narrowboat hire?

It depends on the firm. Napton, Union Canal Carriers, Wyvern, Kate Boats, Andersen and Beacon Park include diesel in the hire price. Black Prince, Calcutt and Norbury Wharf charge for diesel on return.

How much does it cost to hire a narrowboat for a week?

Few firms publish prices outside their booking systems. Union Canal Carriers lists £1,080–£1,775 a week for a 4-berth boat, and Caley Cruisers lists £1,070–£1,801 for its 4–5 berth cruisers on the Caledonian Canal. Expect the top of the range in school summer holidays.

Is the Llangollen Canal open?

Partly. An embankment near Whitchurch gave way on 22 December 2025, and the Canal & River Trust expects to reopen that stretch in March 2027, weather permitting. Boats can't pass the breach until then, but trips that stay west of it, such as Trevor or Chirk to Llangollen over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, still run. Our Llangollen Canal guide lists which bases and round trips are open.

Should I book with the hire firm or an agent?

Agents such as Drifters, Hoseasons and canalholidays.com let you search many firms at once, which helps if you're flexible on canal or dates. Booking direct puts you in touch with the people who will hand over the boat.

How this was put together

Each firm's details come from its own website, read on 4–7 November 2026; the sources are linked under each firm. Firms that have stopped trading (Maestermyn, Middlewich Narrowboats) are left out. Prices and pet fees change every season, so check the firm's site before booking. Spotted something wrong? Email hello@moochtravel.com.
