§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

At the head of the Oxford Canal

Napton-on-the-Hill sits at the summit of the Oxford Canal, two miles east of Southam and roughly midway between Banbury and Coventry. This stretch of Warwickshire is working canal country rather than pretty-postcard territory — the hire base is next to Napton Marina, and within a short cruise you can be out in open countryside or heading for Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford or Birmingham, depending on which way you point the boat.

The Warwickshire Ring and shorter runs

The short-break option is to head north-west to Royal Leamington Spa and on to Warwick Castle, an easy taste of canal life with enough to do at the other end to justify mooring up for a day. Given a full week, the Warwickshire Ring is the classic route: a loop that takes in the countryside around Warwick, the urban canals of Birmingham — Spaghetti Junction and all — then back via Napton Junction. It is a route of real contrasts, and the industrial sections are part of its character rather than something to endure.

Other directions suit different tastes. South down the Oxford Canal leads eventually to Oxford itself. West brings you to Stratford-upon-Avon. North-east along the Grand Union is one of the longest cruising routes in the country, while a run to the Waterways Museum at Stoke Bruerne gives the trip a focal point. For a gentler week, Snarestone on the Ashby is lock-light and quiet — how many locks you want to work is effectively how you choose your week.

The boats and the booking

The fleet runs from two-berth boats to ten-berth craft, all fitted with central heating, a kitchen and a bathroom. Training is given before you leave the base, so no previous experience is needed — most hirers are back in rhythm within a few locks. Start days are staggered: three-night breaks begin Friday or Saturday at 2.30pm, four-night breaks Monday or Tuesday at 2.30pm, and full weeks work on Saturday and Tuesday patterns. All boats need to be back and vacated by 9.30am on the final morning.

Getting to Napton

The base is straightforward to reach. Leamington Spa station, roughly nine miles away, is the closest on the Paddington line. Rugby, about ten miles, is served from Euston. Birmingham International is the nearest airport. By car, it is the A425 from Daventry towards Leamington — approached via M40 Junction 11 or 12, M1 Junction 16, or M6 Junction 2. The base entrance is on the road itself, signed on the approach.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1Do I need a licence?

No. The hire base gives you a short handover covering steering, locks, and safety before you set off. Speed limit is 4 mph on UK narrowboats — slower than a walking pace. If you can drive a car, you can drive a canal boat.

Q2How many locks will I do?

Depends on the route. The Llangollen has about 20 over a week — leisurely. The Caen Hill flight on the Kennet & Avon has 29 in one stretch — a full day's work. Some European routes (Canal du Midi, Camargue) have almost none. The operator's map shows lock counts per day so you can pace yourself.

Q3Can I travel solo?

Most hire companies require two adults on board, mainly so one person can work locks while the other steers. A few allow solo hire on quieter routes — ask the operator before booking.

Q4What's included?

Typically the boat, fuel for the engine, a handover briefing, mooring ropes, fenders and a starter pack (tea, coffee, washing-up kit). Bedding is sometimes included, sometimes £10-20 extra. Food is your own, shopped from towpath-side villages.

Q5What if something breaks?

The hire base has a 24/7 support line. A fitter will usually come out within a few hours. Engines are robust and well-maintained — the most common failures are blocked weed hatches (clearable yourself) and flat domestic batteries.

Q6Is it good for kids?

Yes — lifejackets are provided and kids love working locks. Older children (6+) can help steer under supervision. Toddlers need constant watching near open decks. A reinforced guard rail helps.

Q7Can I bring my dog?

Most hire companies allow one or two dogs for a small supplement (£20-30 per dog per week). They love the towpath walks. The boat will lose its deposit if the dog damages upholstery — bring a blanket.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a 25% deposit at booking, balance 8-12 weeks before departure. Each operator has its own cancellation ladder (steeper close to departure). Travel insurance with cruise cover is recommended.
