About this trip.

What the Marne-Rhine feels like

The Marne-Rhine Canal cuts across Alsace-Lorraine in north-eastern France, a quietly trafficked waterway with some unusually ambitious engineering on it — the deepest lock in France sits on one end of the stretch, and the eastern section climbs out of the valley on a counterweighted boat lift at Arzviller rather than a traditional staircase of locks. Timothy West and Prunella Scales filmed part of their canal series here, which gives a fair sense of the character: a slow week, two national cultures rubbing against each other, and enough to look at from the deck to keep you off your phone.

Three directions from Hesse

The base at Hesse is a useful starting point because the canal branches nearby and you can choose which way to go. Head west and you pass through the deepest lock in France on the way to Nancy, roughly fourteen hours of cruising from Hesse. Nancy is the grand stop of the region, a city of Art Nouveau and Baroque architecture that rewards a proper day off the boat. Branch north shortly after leaving Hesse and you are pointed at Saarbrücken over the German border — a more cosmopolitan run that's handy if you want a change of language and supper menu partway through the week. East is the signature route. Two hours out of Hesse the Arzviller boat lift carries you up the hillside in one go, and from there it is another fourteen and a half hours of cruising to Strasbourg, which most people agree is worth the full week. The seven-night one-way from the Marne-Rhine to Strasbourg is the itinerary to book if that is the run you want, as it saves you doubling back.

Picking up the boat

The base sits at Port du Canal in Hesse (57400), six kilometres from Sarrebourg station and seventy-four kilometres from Strasbourg-Entzheim airport (SXB). Sarrebourg is the easier approach if you are coming by rail; Entzheim if you are flying in. Le Boat produces a regional PDF guide for the Marne-Rhine that lists the moorings and towns along the way, and the UK sales line runs Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings if you would rather talk the options through with someone who has done the route themselves.

Who it suits

This is a comfortable cruise rather than a demanding one — the headline engineering, the deep lock and the Arzviller lift, is staff-operated, which takes the anxiety out of it. It suits couples and families who want a week of slow days, good bread, and the low-grade pleasure of watching a French canal town drift past at walking pace. If you are after nightlife or a tightly-packed sightseeing itinerary, this is not that holiday.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1Do I need a licence?

No. The hire base gives you a short handover covering steering, locks, and safety before you set off. Speed limit is 4 mph on UK narrowboats — slower than a walking pace. If you can drive a car, you can drive a canal boat.

Q2How many locks will I do?

Depends on the route. The Llangollen has about 20 over a week — leisurely. The Caen Hill flight on the Kennet & Avon has 29 in one stretch — a full day's work. Some European routes (Canal du Midi, Camargue) have almost none. The operator's map shows lock counts per day so you can pace yourself.

Q3Can I travel solo?

Most hire companies require two adults on board, mainly so one person can work locks while the other steers. A few allow solo hire on quieter routes — ask the operator before booking.

Q4What's included?

Typically the boat, fuel for the engine, a handover briefing, mooring ropes, fenders and a starter pack (tea, coffee, washing-up kit). Bedding is sometimes included, sometimes £10-20 extra. Food is your own, shopped from towpath-side villages.

Q5What if something breaks?

The hire base has a 24/7 support line. A fitter will usually come out within a few hours. Engines are robust and well-maintained — the most common failures are blocked weed hatches (clearable yourself) and flat domestic batteries.

Q6Is it good for kids?

Yes — lifejackets are provided and kids love working locks. Older children (6+) can help steer under supervision. Toddlers need constant watching near open decks. A reinforced guard rail helps.

Q7Can I bring my dog?

Most hire companies allow one or two dogs for a small supplement (£20-30 per dog per week). They love the towpath walks. The boat will lose its deposit if the dog damages upholstery — bring a blanket.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a 25% deposit at booking, balance 8-12 weeks before departure. Each operator has its own cancellation ladder (steeper close to departure). Travel insurance with cruise cover is recommended.
