About this trip.
The Maltese fish tail and a UNESCO capital
Malta is just 27km long and 14.5km wide, so the country reads less like a destination and more like a sandstone shelf set down in the middle of the Mediterranean. The "fish tail" — the ragged northern coastline where the watch towers still stand — gives this trip its best coastal walking, with views over to Gozo and the smaller island of Comino. Inland, the landscape is a patchwork of salt pans, low stone walls and fishing villages where the painted Luzzu boats sit in the harbours. Valletta, the smallest capital in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site, anchors the first half of the week: narrow streets, fountains, fortified walls, and enough cafés to make resting feel like part of the itinerary.
A twin centre week, Malta then Gozo
The trip runs to 7 nights, split between the two islands. You're based just outside Valletta in St Julian's for the first leg, using a 7-day bus ticket to reach the start of each walk and ride back at the end. Day 5 is the transfer to Gozo, the smaller and quieter of the islands at 14km by 7km. Nothing in Gozo is far from anywhere else, which suits a walking holiday — the pace slows, the coast opens up, and the routes lead you past Fungus Rock in the centre of Dwejra Bay, the Inland Sea, and through the cobbled lanes of the older villages. Between autumn and late spring the countryside flowers properly, with wild herbs underfoot.
This is a Level 2 holiday in Headwater's grading, meaning walks of 8–15km a day and daily ascent or descent of up to 700m. The terrain is mostly moderate — ancient roads, old farm tracks, a few stony stretches, the occasional steep descent down to the coast. No specific walking experience required, but you should be in reasonable health, and there may be sections where a brief scramble is called for.
Self-guided, with the route on your phone
It's a self-guided format, so there's no group and no leader. Headwater provides detailed directions and access to their navigation app, which is designed to keep your eyes on the scenery rather than a paper map. You're free to pick and choose which walks to do on which day, mixing levels to suit how you feel — useful in a Mediterranean climate where some mornings are made for striding and some afternoons are not.
Bookings and logistics
The price covers 7 nights in 4-star or 4-star-equivalent hotels, buffet breakfasts, a briefing on arrival, the navigation app, luggage transfers between hotels, and the 7-day bus ticket. On Malta you'll stay at the Waterfront Hotel in Gżira, the Hotel Holm in St Julian's, or Hotel Verdi. Flights from London or regional airports can be added at booking — Headwater holds a full ATOL licence and is ABTA-bonded, so the package is fully protected when flights are included. Optional extras cover airport parking, lounge access, fast-track security, priority boarding and upgraded cabin classes. Book this holiday and you'll receive a National Trust gift card worth up to £170.
It suits walkers who want coastal scenery and a good amount of history without the long mileage of a more demanding trip, and who like the flexibility of choosing their own pace each day.

Everything you might be wondering.
Q1How hard is it really?
The grading is set by the operator and usually reflects daily distance and total ascent. As a rule of thumb: if you can comfortably manage a 5-6 hour hillwalk at home on a weekend, a moderate-graded route will be fine. Read the day-by-day notes carefully, and train with a loaded pack in the months before.
Q2Can I do this solo?
Yes — self-guided walking holidays are well suited to solo travellers, and some operators waive the single-room supplement on certain departures. The route notes are written for confident independent walkers, and most operators run a 24/7 support line.
Q3Do I need to speak the language?
No. Hotels and restaurants on the route are used to English-speaking walkers. A phrasebook for menus and a few polite basics (hello, thank you, please) is all you really need. The operator's support line speaks English.
Q4Can I bring my dog?
Some routes are dog-friendly, others aren't — it depends on whether all the accommodation on the itinerary accepts dogs. Check with the operator before booking. If you do bring a dog, you'll need a pet passport, up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a lead for villages.
Q5What if it rains?
The route is walkable in rain — your luggage travels ahead regardless, so you'll always arrive somewhere dry. Some trails get slippery in wet weather and the operator's support line can arrange a taxi for any stage if conditions are properly bad.
Q6How do I get there from the UK?
Most routes are reachable by a short flight to a nearby airport, followed by train or transfer. The operator will usually point you at the nearest airport and can advise on rail connections. Some will book train tickets on your behalf for a small fee.
Q7Can I shorten or extend it?
Usually yes. Many operators offer shorter versions of a route as a standalone, and most will add extra nights at the start or end at their own rates. Ask when you enquire — they'll tailor it before booking.
Q8What about cancellation?
Typically a deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
