§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

Weighing up hire firms? UK narrowboat hire, compared lists 32 firms by canal, dog fees and fuel.

Before you book: Canal du Midi vs UK narrowboating — same week, different country, very different holiday · How we vet operators — and the questions you should ask any small-group operator yourself

The 30-lock Tardebigge Flight is close to Alvechurch Marina in Worcestershire. It's the longest flight of locks in the UK, and it takes you down towards Worcester and the River Severn. The marina sits at the heart of a very varied canal network, with routes across the Midlands to suit most lengths of break. These range from lock-free weekends into Birmingham to fortnight-long trips around the Warwickshire Ring.

Short breaks from Alvechurch

For a few days afloat, Birmingham and return mixes country miles with city sightseeing, plus canalside beer gardens and the chance to visit a chocolate factory. The Birmingham Mini Ring covers parts of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, the Birmingham Canal Navigations, the Grand Union and the Stratford Canal. From Alvechurch it has several aqueducts, four tunnels (one passed through twice) and 49 locks, and it can be done in four nights. Lapworth and return goes through villages and past a number of reservoirs. It also takes in a long tunnel and historic locks and bridges, and you cross from Worcestershire into Warwickshire.

Longer routes and rings

The Droitwich Canals can be cruised as part of the Stourport Ring. You can also do them as a return trip, going down the Tardebigge flight to Hanbury and turning onto the Droitwich Canal. The Stourport Ring covers the whole Worcester & Birmingham Canal and parts of the River Severn, the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal and the Birmingham Canal Navigations. Stratford-upon-Avon and return runs from Alvechurch to Stratford, with wildlife and canalside beer gardens along the way. The Avon Ring takes in Worcester, Tewkesbury, Evesham and Stratford-upon-Avon. The Black Country Ring mixes rural and urban stretches across six canals. From Alvechurch it includes five tunnels, several aqueducts and 79 locks, over seven nights or a more relaxed fourteen. The Warwickshire Ring is a 100-mile route through the northern Grand Union, north Oxford, Birmingham and Fazeley, and Coventry canals.

Boats, the Weighbridge and getting there

The marina has over 19 boats across 12 classes, all built by hand on site. They range from 45ft boats for two to four people up to 70ft boats sleeping as many as 12. The multi-award-winning Weighbridge pub is also on site and serves hot and cold food along with real ales.

By car, leave the M42 at Junction 2 and follow the A441 towards Birmingham, then the brown signs for the marina. By train, travel to Birmingham New Street and change to the local service to Redditch. Alvechurch is the last stop before Redditch, and the marina is about 300 metres from the station. From Birmingham International Airport, a taxi takes about 30 minutes.

§ 03 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1Do I need a licence?

No. The hire base gives you a short handover covering steering, locks, and safety before you set off. Speed limit is 4 mph on UK narrowboats — slower than a walking pace. If you can drive a car, you can drive a canal boat.

Q2How many locks will I do?

Depends on the route. The Llangollen has about 20 over a week — leisurely. The Caen Hill flight on the Kennet & Avon has 29 in one stretch — a full day's work. Some European routes (Canal du Midi, Camargue) have almost none. The operator's map shows lock counts per day so you can pace yourself.

Q3Can I travel solo?

Most hire companies require two adults on board, mainly so one person can work locks while the other steers. A few allow solo hire on quieter routes — ask the operator before booking.

Q4What's included?

Typically the boat, fuel for the engine, a handover briefing, mooring ropes, fenders and a starter pack (tea, coffee, washing-up kit). Bedding is sometimes included, sometimes £10-20 extra. Food is your own, shopped from towpath-side villages.

Q5What if something breaks?

The hire base has a 24/7 support line. A fitter will usually come out within a few hours. Engines are robust and well-maintained — the most common failures are blocked weed hatches (clearable yourself) and flat domestic batteries.

Q6Is it good for kids?

Yes — lifejackets are provided and kids love working locks. Older children (6+) can help steer under supervision. Toddlers need constant watching near open decks. A reinforced guard rail helps.

Q7Can I bring my dog?

Most hire companies allow one or two dogs for a small supplement (£20-30 per dog per week). They love the towpath walks. The boat will lose its deposit if the dog damages upholstery — bring a blanket.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a 25% deposit at booking, balance 8-12 weeks before departure. Each operator has its own cancellation ladder (steeper close to departure). Travel insurance with cruise cover is recommended.
