§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

Limestone country in the middle Dordogne

The middle stretch of the Dordogne is limestone country — pale cliffs, ravines, walnut orchards, and a string of villages that have spent the last few centuries either perched on rock or curled along the river. This walk threads through them on foot, inn to inn, with each day measured in hours rather than miles: three to five and a half, depending on the route. The region rewards the slower pace. Lavender, sorghum, apple orchards, and forest paths give way to open farmland and the limestone scree of the next valley, and the food and wine along the way are part of the point, not a footnote to it.

The route through Rocamadour and Beaulieu

Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne sits on the river itself, low and quiet — a sensible place to begin. From there the path climbs into the hills towards Loubressac, one of the officially designated plus beaux villages, with the bulk of Castelnau-Bretenoux fortress visible across the valley. Autoire follows, tucked at the foot of an amphitheatre of cliffs; the climb out the next morning is one of the more memorable starts to a walking day. Carennac, further on, is a medieval village in honey-coloured stone, and the long walk from there to Meyronne crosses forest, river, and farmland in roughly equal measure. Rocamadour, clinging vertically to its cliff, comes towards the end. There is a working watermill on the fifth day that walkers tend to remember more than they expect to, and the cliff-top chateau at Belcastel rounds out a route that doesn't waste a day on filler.

Booking and the practical side

On Foot Holidays runs this as a self-guided walk from a small office in Salisbury, and the operator's particular character is its handover: detailed route notes, a GPS app, paper maps, and verbal instructions from staff who actually know the trail. Bags are moved between inns, and the inns themselves are riverside and family-run rather than corporate. Reviewers tend to single out the office team by name, which is a useful signal — small, attentive operations rarely run themselves.

Four route lengths are offered: four nights from £955, five from £1105, six from £1285, and seven from £1335. The shorter options trim days from either end rather than rushing the middle. Walking is graded a steady three to five and a half hours a day — not strenuous, but not entirely flat either, which is the nature of limestone country. It suits walkers who want a real route with proper food at the end of it, and who don't mind a climb out of a village before breakfast has properly settled.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard is it really?

The grading is set by the operator and usually reflects daily distance and total ascent. As a rule of thumb: if you can comfortably manage a 5-6 hour hillwalk at home on a weekend, a moderate-graded route will be fine. Read the day-by-day notes carefully, and train with a loaded pack in the months before.

Q2Can I do this solo?

Yes — self-guided walking holidays are well suited to solo travellers, and some operators waive the single-room supplement on certain departures. The route notes are written for confident independent walkers, and most operators run a 24/7 support line.

Q3Do I need to speak the language?

No. Hotels and restaurants on the route are used to English-speaking walkers. A phrasebook for menus and a few polite basics (hello, thank you, please) is all you really need. The operator's support line speaks English.

Q4Can I bring my dog?

Some routes are dog-friendly, others aren't — it depends on whether all the accommodation on the itinerary accepts dogs. Check with the operator before booking. If you do bring a dog, you'll need a pet passport, up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a lead for villages.

Q5What if it rains?

The route is walkable in rain — your luggage travels ahead regardless, so you'll always arrive somewhere dry. Some trails get slippery in wet weather and the operator's support line can arrange a taxi for any stage if conditions are properly bad.

Q6How do I get there from the UK?

Most routes are reachable by a short flight to a nearby airport, followed by train or transfer. The operator will usually point you at the nearest airport and can advise on rail connections. Some will book train tickets on your behalf for a small fee.

Q7Can I shorten or extend it?

Usually yes. Many operators offer shorter versions of a route as a standalone, and most will add extra nights at the start or end at their own rates. Ask when you enquire — they'll tailor it before booking.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
