§ Curator's note

Mountain walking with sea views — the Alpes Maritimes drop straight to the Mediterranean and this is one of the few self-guided itineraries that makes it walkable in five days.

§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

Where the Alps meet the sea

The Alpes Maritimes is the corner of France where the Alps come down to the Mediterranean, and this walk traces that descent on foot. The terrain is honest mountain country: stone-built villages perched above gorges, narrow paths cut into hillsides, wild flowers in early summer, and the sea waiting at the end. It is quiet in a way that much of the south of France no longer is — walkers regularly go a full day without meeting another party, and the villages along the route have not been polished up for tourism.

The walking itself is real work. Days run from two and a half to seven hours, with climbs that ask something of you and descents on paths that are sometimes narrow and eroded. Concentration matters. The reward is the kind of view that requires the legs to reach.

From La Brigue down to Menton

The route winds through medieval villages high above the Roya valley before turning south for the coast. From La Brigue you can detour to the frescoed Notre Dame des Fontaines, then climb over a high pass towards Saorge — a stretch several walkers single out as the finest of the trip. Tende sits up the valley, with a circular day-walk around it on the seven-night version. Smaller settlements like Granile and Bergue Supérieur appear along the way, and Sospel, lower down, has a river clean enough to swim in and the Chapelle St Gervais as a place to stay.

The final stretch climbs to St Agnes and drops to Menton on the Mediterranean. Finishing at the sea after six days in the mountains gives the walk a clear shape — Alpine at the start of the week, Riviera by the end.

Booking and practicalities

On Foot Holidays runs the trip self-guided, with luggage moved between hotels each day and a local representative on hand if anything needs sorting out. Navigation is via an app that follows your position along the route and chimes if you wander off; the supporting notes on history and the natural surrounds are designed to be read as you walk rather than left in the room. Past walkers consistently rate both the app and the pre-departure information pack highly, and pick out the local hosts — particularly Pascale at the Chapelle St Gervais in Sospel — as a real part of the holiday rather than a logistical detail.

The seven-night version (six days walking) is the standard route, from £1205 per person; a shorter six-night version is available from £1110. The walk suits people who are reasonably fit, comfortable on uneven mountain paths, and happy with their own company for long stretches — it is not a tourist trail, and the rhythm of moving on each day is part of the point. Customer feedback in the shoulder seasons points to June for the wild flowers and long days, and September for clear air and quiet villages.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard is it really?

The grading is set by the operator and usually reflects daily distance and total ascent. As a rule of thumb: if you can comfortably manage a 5-6 hour hillwalk at home on a weekend, a moderate-graded route will be fine. Read the day-by-day notes carefully, and train with a loaded pack in the months before.

Q2Can I do this solo?

Yes — self-guided walking holidays are well suited to solo travellers, and some operators waive the single-room supplement on certain departures. The route notes are written for confident independent walkers, and most operators run a 24/7 support line.

Q3Do I need to speak the language?

No. Hotels and restaurants on the route are used to English-speaking walkers. A phrasebook for menus and a few polite basics (hello, thank you, please) is all you really need. The operator's support line speaks English.

Q4Can I bring my dog?

Some routes are dog-friendly, others aren't — it depends on whether all the accommodation on the itinerary accepts dogs. Check with the operator before booking. If you do bring a dog, you'll need a pet passport, up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a lead for villages.

Q5What if it rains?

The route is walkable in rain — your luggage travels ahead regardless, so you'll always arrive somewhere dry. Some trails get slippery in wet weather and the operator's support line can arrange a taxi for any stage if conditions are properly bad.

Q6How do I get there from the UK?

Most routes are reachable by a short flight to a nearby airport, followed by train or transfer. The operator will usually point you at the nearest airport and can advise on rail connections. Some will book train tickets on your behalf for a small fee.

Q7Can I shorten or extend it?

Usually yes. Many operators offer shorter versions of a route as a standalone, and most will add extra nights at the start or end at their own rates. Ask when you enquire — they'll tailor it before booking.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
