§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of Europe's most walked long-distance routes, and for reasons that become obvious within the first day: it loops the entire Mont Blanc massif, crossing France, Italy and Switzerland on a single footpath. Walkers have been tracing this circuit for well over a century, and the trail has settled into a rhythm of high cols, valley floors, and villages that have made their peace with hikers passing through every summer.

Walking the TMB

The draw is the scale of it. You are circling Western Europe's highest mountain, and the views shift daily — the granite spires above Chamonix giving way to the Val Ferret's pastoral sweep on the Italian side, then the quieter Swiss stretch around Champex-Lac, before the long return through Col de la Seigne country back towards France. The trail is well waymarked, genuinely demanding in places, and not remotely a secret; expect company on the classic stages in July and August.

Twelve days, eleven nights

This version walks the full circuit in twelve days and eleven nights, at the Comfort pace rather than a compressed itinerary. That extra breathing room matters on a route with serious daily ascents — it lets you linger at the rifugios over lunch rather than racing the next col, and leaves space for the odd half-day of weather sense. Each night is in a different village or valley, so your main luggage moves ahead on the transfer service while you walk with a daypack.

The three-country character is what defines the TMB: French alpine villages, Italian mountain huts with their particular approach to polenta and wine, and Swiss valleys where the architecture and signage change within a single afternoon's walk. There is no single signature feature in the way a canal has an aqueduct; the signature is the loop itself, and the sense by day ten that you are closing a circle around a mountain you have been watching from every angle.

Self-guided, with the comforts

Macs Adventure runs this as a self-guided holiday, which on the TMB means route notes, GPS tracks, pre-booked accommodation and daily bag transfers — but no guide walking with you. You pick your start date, set your own pace within the planned daily stages, and eat where you like in the evenings. The Comfort grading points to the standard of the overnight stops rather than an easier route; the walking itself is still proper mountain terrain, with long days and real altitude.

It suits walkers who are at home navigating alpine paths independently, who would rather not move in a group, and who like the idea of finishing the day with a proper bed and a decent dinner rather than a dormitory bunk.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard is it really?

The grading is set by the operator and usually reflects daily distance and total ascent. As a rule of thumb: if you can comfortably manage a 5-6 hour hillwalk at home on a weekend, a moderate-graded route will be fine. Read the day-by-day notes carefully, and train with a loaded pack in the months before.

Q2Can I do this solo?

Yes — self-guided walking holidays are well suited to solo travellers, and some operators waive the single-room supplement on certain departures. The route notes are written for confident independent walkers, and most operators run a 24/7 support line.

Q3Do I need to speak the language?

No. Hotels and restaurants on the route are used to English-speaking walkers. A phrasebook for menus and a few polite basics (hello, thank you, please) is all you really need. The operator's support line speaks English.

Q4Can I bring my dog?

Some routes are dog-friendly, others aren't — it depends on whether all the accommodation on the itinerary accepts dogs. Check with the operator before booking. If you do bring a dog, you'll need a pet passport, up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a lead for villages.

Q5What if it rains?

The route is walkable in rain — your luggage travels ahead regardless, so you'll always arrive somewhere dry. Some trails get slippery in wet weather and the operator's support line can arrange a taxi for any stage if conditions are properly bad.

Q6How do I get there from the UK?

Most routes are reachable by a short flight to a nearby airport, followed by train or transfer. The operator will usually point you at the nearest airport and can advise on rail connections. Some will book train tickets on your behalf for a small fee.

Q7Can I shorten or extend it?

Usually yes. Many operators offer shorter versions of a route as a standalone, and most will add extra nights at the start or end at their own rates. Ask when you enquire — they'll tailor it before booking.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
