From Chipping Campden to Bath

This nine-day, eight-night walk is graded challenging and follows the Cotswold Way from Chipping Campden to Bath. You walk for seven days, most of them between 12 and 19 miles, and the trip ends at Bath Abbey next to the Roman Baths. Your accommodation with breakfast, baggage transfer, route notes, GPS tracks and 24/7 support are all included.

The first walking day, from Chipping Campden to Winchcombe (18.6 miles / 30 km, 680 metres of ascent), passes through Broadway and Stanton. The route describes these as places full of history, beautifully kept and full of old buildings. The ruins of a Cistercian monastery at Hailes and Sudeley Castle are not far from the trail at Winchcombe. The next day takes you on to Leckhampton Hill (17.4 miles / 28 km). On the way you cross Cleeve Common, which at 317m is the highest point of the walk, and on a clear day you can see the Brecon Beacons in Wales. You also walk through Lineover Wood, where some of the trees are over 700 years old.

Woods, escarpments and the Severn

A shorter stage of 12.4 miles takes you through Crickley Hill Country Park, with wide views from the escarpment. You then pass the beech woods near Birdlip, where wild deer roam, and the trail comes down past a golf course into Painswick. From Painswick to Dursley you can walk either 16.8 or 18.6 miles. The stage starts in open countryside and then runs through Stockend Wood and Standish Wood. At Nympsfield there are burial grounds dating back 5,000 years, with views over the Severn Valley.

Leaving Dursley there is a steep climb, followed by views over the Severn Estuary. At North Nibley you pass a monument to William Tyndale, a local man who translated the Bible into English in the 16th century. The stage ends at Hillesley.

The final stretch to Bath

From Hillesley to Cold Ashton (16.2 miles / 26 km), the route passes the estates of Horton Court, Dodington Park and Dyrham Park, where you may see deer, rabbits and foxes. The last day is the shortest, at 10.6 miles. It crosses the site of a 1643 Civil War battle before coming down into Bath.

§ 03 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard is it really?

The grading is set by the operator and usually reflects daily distance and total ascent. As a rule of thumb: if you can comfortably manage a 5-6 hour hillwalk at home on a weekend, a moderate-graded route will be fine. Read the day-by-day notes carefully, and train with a loaded pack in the months before.

Q2Can I do this solo?

Yes — self-guided walking holidays are well suited to solo travellers, and some operators waive the single-room supplement on certain departures. The route notes are written for confident independent walkers, and most operators run a 24/7 support line.

Q3Do I need to speak the language?

No. Hotels and restaurants on the route are used to English-speaking walkers. A phrasebook for menus and a few polite basics (hello, thank you, please) is all you really need. The operator's support line speaks English.

Q4Can I bring my dog?

Some routes are dog-friendly, others aren't — it depends on whether all the accommodation on the itinerary accepts dogs. Check with the operator before booking. If you do bring a dog, you'll need a pet passport, up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a lead for villages.

Q5What if it rains?

The route is walkable in rain — your luggage travels ahead regardless, so you'll always arrive somewhere dry. Some trails get slippery in wet weather and the operator's support line can arrange a taxi for any stage if conditions are properly bad.

Q6How do I get there from the UK?

Most routes are reachable by a short flight to a nearby airport, followed by train or transfer. The operator will usually point you at the nearest airport and can advise on rail connections. Some will book train tickets on your behalf for a small fee.

Q7Can I shorten or extend it?

Usually yes. Many operators offer shorter versions of a route as a standalone, and most will add extra nights at the start or end at their own rates. Ask when you enquire — they'll tailor it before booking.

Q8What about cancellation?

Typically a deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
