§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

Coast to coast in five days

The C2C is the UK's most-ridden long-distance cycling route, and it earns the reputation. From Whitehaven on the Cumbrian coast to Tynemouth on the North Sea, the line drawn across northern England takes in three landscapes that have very little in common: the lakes and fells of Cumbria, the high, empty moors of the North Pennines, and the slow industrial unwinding of the Tyne valley back to the sea. It's 150 miles, and the supported version stretches it to a sensible five days so you can actually enjoy the bits that are worth lingering over.

This trip uses the National Cycle Network — quiet country lanes, dedicated cycleways, the occasional disused railway path. It is properly cycle-friendly, which matters on a route this length. It is not, however, flat: the Pennines are the Pennines, and the climb out of Cumbria is the moment most riders remember. The brief calls it Grade 3 (out of 5), which feels honest.

The route, day by day

The starting point is Newcastle, chosen for its road, rail and air links — useful if you're coming from anywhere south of York. You arrive on day one, transfer by minibus to a B&B near Keswick, and meet the group over dinner. Day two begins with another minibus run, this time over to Whitehaven on the west coast, where you dip a wheel in the Irish Sea and start riding east.

From there it's Cumbria and the edge of the Lake District, then up onto the North Pennines — the highest, most exposed stretch, and the one that delivers the dramatic landscapes the C2C is known for. The final day drops down along the River Tyne, through Newcastle and across the Millennium Bridge — a small, satisfying piece of theatre — before finishing at Tynemouth on the North Sea. Two coasts, four days of cycling, one country crossed under your own steam.

What "supported" means here

A vehicle carries your luggage between B&Bs, lunches are provided on the road (Skedaddle take their picnics seriously), and a guide rides with the group. The accommodation is bike-friendly B&Bs with proper breakfasts — not luxury, but the right idea for a riding holiday where you want a hot shower, a cooked meal and a secure place for the bike.

E-bike hire is available, and worth considering if the climbs concern you. The one caveat the operator is upfront about: on a group departure, the pace is set by riders on regular bikes, so the e-bike won't make you go faster — it'll just make the day less tiring. That's a fair trade for most people.

Bookings and logistics

Prices start at £895 per person for the five-day supported trip. Self-guided versions are also offered over three, four or five days for riders who'd rather go at their own pace and skip the group dinners. Private departures can be arranged for families or groups of friends if the standard dates don't suit, or if you'd like the itinerary adjusted. The number to call is on the trip notes; otherwise booking is straightforward online.

It suits regular leisure cyclists who can comfortably ride 30-40 miles a day on mixed terrain, and who fancy the sense of occasion that comes with crossing a country coast to coast.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard are the climbs?

Grading reflects daily distance, total climbing, and traffic. Moderate routes typically involve 40-60km a day with 300-600m of climbing, on quiet roads or well-surfaced bike paths. If you ride regularly at home and can manage a 40km weekend ride, you'll be fine. Check the daily elevation profile when the operator shares it.

Q2Is bike rental included?

It's usually included, with a hybrid as standard and an e-bike or road-bike upgrade available for a supplement. Helmets and panniers normally come with the rental. Check the operator's booking page for the exact inclusions on this trip.

Q3What if I get a puncture?

Rental bikes come with a small repair kit and a pump. If you can't fix it yourself, the operator's support line can arrange a replacement or a lift to the next hotel — times vary by location. Carry a phone and the support number at all times.

Q4Can I use my own bike?

Yes, most operators are happy for you to bring your own bike — you'll often get a small discount off the trip price in lieu of rental. Check with the airline on how to transport it, and bring basic spares (tubes, multi-tool).

Q5Can I do this solo?

Absolutely — self-guided cycling holidays work well for solo travellers. The route notes, GPX files, and 24/7 support are designed for confident independent riders.

Q6What if the weather is bad?

The route is rideable in rain if you're dressed for it, though some surfaces get slower. The operator's support line can reroute you onto a lower / flatter alternative or arrange a vehicle transfer for any stage if conditions are genuinely unsafe.

Q7How do I get there from the UK?

Fly into the nearest airport, then train or transfer to the start point. The operator will advise — some will book onward trains for a small fee. If you're bringing your own bike, check dimensions and dismantling requirements with the airline in advance.

Q8What about cancellation?

A deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance with cycle cover is strongly recommended.
