§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

A fortnight on a Sri Lankan island

Sri Lanka rewards a cyclist in a way few destinations manage: the country is small enough to cross in a fortnight, but its terrain shifts dramatically between coast, hill country and ancient plain. This Pedal Nation trip runs to fourteen days, with nine of them spent in the saddle, covering roughly 260 miles. Pedal Nation runs it in partnership with its sister company High Places, which has been putting together activity holidays in Asia for decades. The Sri Lanka itinerary is built locally by manager Sunny Wattel and his team, who handle the routes, the support vehicle and the on-the-ground logistics.

The variety is the point. The west coast is hot and flat at sea level. The Hill Country is cooler and steeper, with verdant tea plantations climbing the slopes. The Cultural Triangle to the north holds the ancient sites — the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the royal palace ruins at Polonnaruwa, and the old capital of Anuradhapura, all UNESCO-listed. Down south, the route runs through coastal plains and wildlife-rich national parks before finishing at the beaches. Riding lets you cover ground at a pace where a wave from a tuk-tuk driver or a king coconut handed over at a roadside stall actually registers.

From Negombo into the Hill Country

The trip starts in Colombo with a bike fit and a day to acclimatise to riding in the tropics. From there the first proper stage heads inland from Negombo on the west coast, through rice fields and small villages to Kitulgala, where the first night is at The Rafters Retreat. The following day climbs into the Hill Country towards Nuwara Eliya — a cool, misty contrast to the coastal heat. Beyond the hills the route works north through the Cultural Triangle and then south through floodplains, rainforest and national parks before returning to Colombo. Daily distances are approximate and the route is openly flexible: weather, fitness and local conditions can all reshape a given day. Expect frequent stops for water, fresh fruit and the ubiquitous king coconut.

Bookings, grade and what's included

The tour is graded Age Grade 2, putting it at the gentler end of Pedal Nation's range — varied rather than relentless, with a support vehicle carrying luggage and tired legs as needed. The lead price is £2,795 per person sharing, rising to £2,995 on the November 2026 and September 2027 departures; the single room supplement is £350. Included: all accommodation, lunch each day, the cycling guide, GPX files, vehicle support, baggage transfer between hotels, and airport transfers within Sri Lanka. Not included: international flights, any domestic flights, bike hire, travel insurance, visas, and evening meals unless specifically listed in the day-by-day plan.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard are the climbs?

Grading reflects daily distance, total climbing, and traffic. Moderate routes typically involve 40-60km a day with 300-600m of climbing, on quiet roads or well-surfaced bike paths. If you ride regularly at home and can manage a 40km weekend ride, you'll be fine. Check the daily elevation profile when the operator shares it.

Q2Is bike rental included?

It's usually included, with a hybrid as standard and an e-bike or road-bike upgrade available for a supplement. Helmets and panniers normally come with the rental. Check the operator's booking page for the exact inclusions on this trip.

Q3What if I get a puncture?

Rental bikes come with a small repair kit and a pump. If you can't fix it yourself, the operator's support line can arrange a replacement or a lift to the next hotel — times vary by location. Carry a phone and the support number at all times.

Q4Can I use my own bike?

Yes, most operators are happy for you to bring your own bike — you'll often get a small discount off the trip price in lieu of rental. Check with the airline on how to transport it, and bring basic spares (tubes, multi-tool).

Q5Can I do this solo?

Absolutely — self-guided cycling holidays work well for solo travellers. The route notes, GPX files, and 24/7 support are designed for confident independent riders.

Q6What if the weather is bad?

The route is rideable in rain if you're dressed for it, though some surfaces get slower. The operator's support line can reroute you onto a lower / flatter alternative or arrange a vehicle transfer for any stage if conditions are genuinely unsafe.

Q7How do I get there from the UK?

Fly into the nearest airport, then train or transfer to the start point. The operator will advise — some will book onward trains for a small fee. If you're bringing your own bike, check dimensions and dismantling requirements with the airline in advance.

Q8What about cancellation?

A deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance with cycle cover is strongly recommended.
