Cycling the Paradors of Extremadura

§ 01 · Overview

About this trip.

Paradors and the Extremadura plain

Paradors are Spain's state-run hotels, built into the country's old bones — convents, castles, hilltop alcázars, bishops' palaces. Extremadura, the large, under-visited region stretching west from Madrid to the Portuguese border, has one of the densest concentrations in the country. Staying in them is a sizeable part of the point of this trip; cycling between them gives the days a shape.

This is not the Spain of the coast. Extremadura is dehesa country — open oak pasture where Iberian pigs fatten on acorns, dotted with walled medieval towns that rise out of the plain. The region is quiet, warm to the point of uncomfortable in high summer, and historically tied to the conquistadors — many of whom were born here, then sailed for the Americas and came back with enough New World silver to fund the palaces and churches that still dominate the old towns. The architecture they left behind is unusually intact.

Cycling between hotels

Eight days, seven nights, self-guided. You ride between paradors during the day and arrive at a castle, convent or palace in time for a shower and a proper dinner. The pace is unhurried — this is touring rather than sportive riding, though Extremadura is not flat. Expect long open roads, low traffic, hilltop towns to climb to and free-wheel from, and stretches of dehesa where an hour can pass without another car.

Because there's no group and no guide, you set off when you like, stop for a long lunch in a village square if you fancy, and navigate your way to the next hotel at your own pace. That format suits people who want a thinking sort of cycling holiday rather than a pelotoning one.

Booking and practicalities

Prices start at £1,225 per person. As a self-guided trip, the figure typically covers the parador stays and the cycling logistics that hold the week together — it's worth reading the small print on bike hire, luggage transfers between hotels, and meals to see what's included in your case, and what you'll pay for on top. Flights to Spain and ground transfers to the start will be separate.

It suits reasonably fit cyclists who'd rather spend a week riding between characterful places to sleep than chasing mileage. Spring and autumn are the natural seasons: summer in Extremadura is genuinely punishing, and midwinter on the meseta can be colder than you'd expect.

§ 04 · Questions answered

Everything you might be wondering.

Q1How hard are the climbs?

Grading reflects daily distance, total climbing, and traffic. Moderate routes typically involve 40-60km a day with 300-600m of climbing, on quiet roads or well-surfaced bike paths. If you ride regularly at home and can manage a 40km weekend ride, you'll be fine. Check the daily elevation profile when the operator shares it.

Q2Is bike rental included?

It's usually included, with a hybrid as standard and an e-bike or road-bike upgrade available for a supplement. Helmets and panniers normally come with the rental. Check the operator's booking page for the exact inclusions on this trip.

Q3What if I get a puncture?

Rental bikes come with a small repair kit and a pump. If you can't fix it yourself, the operator's support line can arrange a replacement or a lift to the next hotel — times vary by location. Carry a phone and the support number at all times.

Q4Can I use my own bike?

Yes, most operators are happy for you to bring your own bike — you'll often get a small discount off the trip price in lieu of rental. Check with the airline on how to transport it, and bring basic spares (tubes, multi-tool).

Q5Can I do this solo?

Absolutely — self-guided cycling holidays work well for solo travellers. The route notes, GPX files, and 24/7 support are designed for confident independent riders.

Q6What if the weather is bad?

The route is rideable in rain if you're dressed for it, though some surfaces get slower. The operator's support line can reroute you onto a lower / flatter alternative or arrange a vehicle transfer for any stage if conditions are genuinely unsafe.

Q7How do I get there from the UK?

Fly into the nearest airport, then train or transfer to the start point. The operator will advise — some will book onward trains for a small fee. If you're bringing your own bike, check dimensions and dismantling requirements with the airline in advance.

Q8What about cancellation?

A deposit (usually 20-25%) is taken at booking, with the balance due 8-10 weeks before departure. The operator's own terms apply — Mooch doesn't handle the booking or refunds. Travel insurance with cycle cover is strongly recommended.
